I am excited to share that we have launched a new series at BYOL – my new Kickstart video series where I help beginners kickstart their success across different design programs!
In a fun twist, the logo for the Kickstart series came from BYOL student Catarina Pinto. For our recent Kickstart Brand Challenge we challenged the BYOL community to design a logo for the series. We received tons of great submissions and were excited to choose Catarina’s as the final design.
When you become a BYOL member, you gain access to my 30+ additional courses as well as personalized support, the opportunity to earn certificates, and are eligible to participate in community challenges such as the Kickstart Brand Challenge. Head here to sign-up!
Congratulations to Catarina for designing this awesome logo!
This post is based on my Premiere Pro Kickstart course. In this post, we’ll guide you through the essential steps of video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro. By the end, you’ll have a completed video ready for YouTube. Let’s dive in!
Premiere Pro is a powerful video editing software used by both professionals and hobbyists. Whether you're in film, television, marketing, or content creation, Premiere Pro offers an industry-standard platform that simplifies the editing process, especially when dealing with challenging audio and video issues.
Download and Install:
If you haven’t already, download Premiere Pro. Make sure your computer meets the necessary specifications, as video editing can be demanding on your system.
Creating Your First Project:
Open Premiere Pro and create a new project. Give it a name and choose a location to save your files. Organize your project files in a folder structure that works for you.
Import your footage by clicking the big blue button in the project window. You can choose to view your files in a thumbnail or list format based on your preference. Use the Source Monitor to preview your clips before bringing them into your project.
Video editing starts with a batch of raw footage, ready to be cut, arranged, and refined.
Editing is where the real magic happens!
Creating a Sequence: Drag your clips down to the timeline to create a sequence. This is where you will arrange your footage.
Trimming Clips: Use the playhead to find the starting point of your clip and drag to trim. Remember, you're not deleting footage—just adjusting the view.
Using the Source Monitor: For more precise editing, set in and out points in the Source Monitor and drag your selected clips into the timeline.
We can use the source monitor features to fine tune our edits.
Quality audio is crucial—often more important than video quality. Here’s how to improve your sound:
Importing Audio: Bring in your voiceover and other audio elements. Use the Essential Sound panel to classify audio types and adjust levels.
Auto-Matching Levels: Select your clips and let Premiere Pro auto-match loudness for a balanced sound.
Enhancing Speech: Utilize the AI tools in the Essential Sound panel to clean up your audio and remove unwanted noise.
We must always remember that clean and clear sound is key for a professional-level finished project.
To ensure your video looks its best:
Using Lumetri Color: Select your footage and open the Lumetri Color panel. Start with the "Auto" option for a quick adjustment.
Fine-Tuning: Adjust exposure, contrast, and add a vignette for a more cinematic look.
Footage is not always captured under the best lighting settings. Color Correction saved the day!
Finally, it’s time to export your masterpiece:
Choose Export Settings: Use the shortcut (Ctrl + M or Cmd + M) to open the export settings. Set your format to H.264 for an MP4 file.
Select Presets: Depending on your needs, choose either a high-quality or low-quality preset for faster reviews.
Export: Click export and wait for your video to render. Depending on the length and complexity of your project, this may take some time.
You’ve completed your first video editing project!
